All Swim in the 3D pool is diluting its effect
Remember Disney’s TV series of 36 years, “The Wonderful World of COLOR!” back when color was a big deal on TV? Disney knew the magic of color back in 1954 when the series started. While you could oversaturate color to your heart’s content in animation, other TV shows were another story. I remember an almost psychedelically enhanced reality with Lucy’s blooming red lips and almost electrically green grasses of nature shows.
Graphics and multimedia analyst, Jon Peddie, nails it in this blog post about 3D. http://jongpeddie.wordpress.com/2010/07/10/gimmickry-versus-content-in-3d/ Verizon’s recent overhyped experiment with a print ad and free 3D glasses that fell flat on its face is an insult to those who have invested in making 3D a holistic experience, complete with good writing and brilliant execution as Real D and Pixar did with Toy Story 3.
Lesson: If you can’t do it right, don’t do 3D. Stick to writing a good script and execute in 2D. But for those who have the vision and the talent, keep watching to see what Sensio makes possible on the TV screen as well as Nvidia and Nintendo on PCs and mobile.
