LA Times mashup delivers comprehensive look at Mexico’s drug war
A friend of mine pointed me to the following LA Times link http://projects.latimes.com/mexico-drug-war/#/its-a-war . This is an excellent example of how a major newspaper can deliver a mashup of interactive maps, data, multimedia, and dozens of past articles covering a particular issue, in this case the Mexican drug war.
The sheer complexity of this series shows how traditional newspapers have to adapt to the staggering volume of available information and how today’s editors will have to work harder than ever to deliver comprehensive coverage of today’s news.
Dig in. You’ll see photos, interviews, profiles of the perps, filters by region, and video Q and A about the Mexico Under Siege series covering readers’ questions submitted by LA Times readers about such topics as travel in Mexico, the carnage, and what hope there is for legal solutions to this growing dilemma : http://projects.latimes.com/mexico-drug-war/#/question-and-answers
Then ask yourself why newspapers are cutting their editorial staffs. It just doesn’t make sense.
